This technique was developed by Mary Ellen Hopkins in 1989 for her Hidden wells quilt. It can be done with a different number of strips in different or equal widths.

One of my favourite things in quilting is hexagon blocks and I just love kaleidoscope blocks.
To make a kaleidoscope quilt, you only need fabric with a large print and 6 print repeats.
Each block is a hexagon and it uses 6 triangles. You can make it larger by buying enough fabric for 12 repeats or for 18 repeats. Always in multiples of 6. And why not use 6 or 12 panels?
I tend to use my square or rectangular rulers to cut 60 degree angles (see tutorial below) but you don’ t have to. You can use my template

Half square triangles or HSTs are all you need to make great blocks. This tutorial shows you not only now to make 8 HSTs at once but also how just how many blocks you can make when using 3 different fabrics.
Always use high contrasting fabrics for best results

These two blocks are the result of 2 experiments with half square triangles. I think they worked out quite well and it’s worthwhile exploring the concepts further. Stay tuned.
