Two star blocks: Split star and blueberry pie – video tutorial

These two star blocks, Split star and Blueberry pie, are two of my star block favorites.

Use high contrasting fabrics for best results.

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Crumby sawtooth star quilt block video tutorial

This is a classic block but I’m making it modern by using crumb quilting for the centre of the star.

What do you think?

So let’s make a crumby sawtooth star quilt block:

Learn crumb quilting

In case you missed my tutorial on crumb quilting, here it is again.

So how can you use this block. You can make a mini quilt but you can use this block in a quilt.

My lucky stars pattern

Sawtooth star is one of the blocks in My lucky stars quilt.
The pattern can be easily adapted to use crumb quilting by replacing just some parts of each block. See some designs below.

Experimental quilt block video tutorial

This block has so much potential. You can use different fabrics, solids, prints, same tone, scrappy -the sky is the limit.

The mini quilt above is made with 4 modern 12 inch blocks. Each block is made with four half square triangles (HSTs).

How I made this block

Fabric needs

  • Ten 10 inch x 1 1/2 inch strips in assorted prints or colours (the scrappier the better)
  • One 10 inch square piece of white fabric

This tutorial makes 4 HSTs which, arranged in different ways, make different blocks. Each block can make one or more quilt layouts.
