Half square triangles or HSTs are all you need to make great blocks. This tutorial shows you not only now to make 8 HSTs at once but also how just how many blocks you can make when using 3 different fabrics.
Always use high contrasting fabrics for best results

You do such a great job with the videos. I love watching them and am amazed at all the different ways HST can be used! They are my favorite block. With this method, how do you determine the size of squares to start with when you are looking for a particular “finished size”? Is there some kind of chart I am missing? I realize this finished (after trimming) with 3″ HST, but what if you want larger or smaller?

I don’t know of any formula though you may be able to work backward from the starting square. If you divide the side by 2 and use that as your starting hst you probably can use the chart here http://www.blossomheartquilts.com/2012/07/hst-tutorial-and-maths-formula/
