How to make a Ohio star quilt block
The video demonstrates how to make this very easy Ohio star block.
Use strong contrast between fabrics for best results.
Note: on minute 0:8 it says 5 1/2” squares. It should say 5 1/4”.

- Size: 66″ x 66″
- Quilt technique: traditional piecing or foundation paper piecing
- Skill level: Confident beginner.
- Fabric collection: I made the quilt on the cover from my old stash but I designed with Moda Farm Fresh collection in mind and the main diagrams use that fabric collection. This collection has very suitable black and white fabrics, even acqua that will make a beautiful quilt.
My book Turnabout Patchwork
“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Are the larger squares cut at 5 1/2″ or 5 1/4″? I’m confused by your video. Thanks.

Fun! What fabrics did you use? The black and white check looks like linen or a blend of linen and cotton?
I love your videos.

Hi Sharon, I don’t have the math for the different sizes sorry.

Sharon, this block is a 3 x 3 grid. To get a finished 10″ size, you would have to cut some weird number- really not possible in quilting. I made a block using 4″ cut center and outer squares and 4″ quarter square units that size of the block is 11″, finishing to 10.5″.
The formula for making quarter square blocks is: Finished size of block plus 1.25″, then cut that square diagonally both directions.
My example: Finished unit 3.5″ + 1.25″= 4.75″ square.
Hope this is clear to you.
