3 log cabin blocks – video tutorial

Log cabin is a classic block but there are many variations and ways to make them.

Let’s see 3 of them.

Learn to make 3 different log cabin blocks

The mini log cabin belongs to a mini quilt: Tiny quilt.

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Two star blocks: mills stars and 6 pointed star video tutorial

Two stars, 2 techniques.

Freezer paper foundation piecing

To make Mill and Stars block we’ll learn a foundation piecing technique that uses freezer paper.

Freezer paper templates are reusable because you don’t need to stitch through the paper. And removing the paper is a breeze! I hope you enjoy this technique.

Pattern suggestions for these 2 blocks

Block 1: Bijoux quilt pattern

The pattern includes all the fabric needs and assembly instructions as well as the paper templates for foundation piecing featured on the video as well as traditional templates.

For regular paper piecing you’ll have to use all four pieces in the template.

Block 2: 6-pointed star

This 6-pointed star technique, developed in 1991 by Marci Baker, is from the book Oh My Stars! which has 14 different projects. Check it out!

On the video I use a 60 degree ruler. While a 60 degree ruler isn’t necessary, if you intend to cut a lot of 60 degree triangles, it can be a god investment.

How to make this block without a 60 degree ruler?

Learn how to use your straight ruler to cut at 60 degree angles:

Stack and cut layer cakes – video tutorial

I’m working with Michael Miller Collection Fairy Frost Metallic again, this time with a set of layer cakes.

I like pre-cuts because I get to play with all the fabrics in one single collection and all the fabrics tend to go well together.

See an alternative and classy colour scheme with this collection in creams, greys and blacks.

Stay tuned for a table runner I’m going to make with this easy modern block.

Split star quilt block – video tutorial

I came across this great tutorial for a split star by Stash Bee and I couldn’t resist putting it to work.

This tutorial not only teaches you how to make this great block but also it teaches you to make half square triangles and flying geese at the same time. It’s certainly a skill booster.

Fabric on the video

  • Michael Miller’s Cotton couture in purple
  • Tula Pink’s Hipnotized circles in Sorbet.
