This is the fourth block in the Mysteries Down Under quilt.
Contrary wife -not fond of the name- is a classic 9-patch block. I came across the block when I made a Farmer’s wife sampler quilt a few years ago.
It’s a quick and easy block perfect for beginners. It can be made as a one single block quilt or as part of the Mysteries Down Under quilt.
Check out the different designs you can make with just one single block at the end of the video.

My book Turnabout Patchwork
“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.
Buy individual chapters of my book
Now that my publisher is going out of business I have bought the rights to publish my book. Now you can download individual chapters. Each digital download is a bundle with 4 quilt patterns in it.
As well as the instructions and fabric needs to make the blocks you’ll find a section on quiltmaking basics at the end of the pattern that discusses:
- Tools
- Squaring up blocks
- Borders
- Assembly and quilting
- Binding
See all the quilts in the book in a real life project

Many thanks Teresa, for this and all the other tutorials you have given freely. I am looking forward to making this one.

Hi Teresa,
Would like to know if you’re from Spain, in fact, your last names sound Catalan.
I’m from Barcelona and just pre-ordered your book. I’m following you for longer and now I’m looking forward to receive it.
Best from Barcelona

Si soy oscense. Tienes razón que mi nombre suena catalán pero si buscas en la base del INE parece ser que no. Espero que te guste mi libro 😊
