Face mask – template free – video tutorial

Face masks are great to protect others and yourself from a number of viruses as well as allergens.

This year face masks have become mandatory in some countries and I’ve started to test out other ways to make them so I can find the most comfortable type.

This time I’ve made a template-free 3D mask.

I’ve made it in 2 sizes: small (S) and medium/large (S/L). Check the video for details and method.

Fabrics featured on the video

  • May Gibbs Blossom Babies Yellow on Cotton.
I hard time choosing just one fabric from this collection. All the May Gibbs range has beautiful prints and the cotton is very soft and great to work with.
  • Desert Dew Flame by Ellie Whittaker – Nerida Hansen. This fabric is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton printed with low impact dyes.

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

How to make a comfortable face mask – video tutorial

My previous face mask tutorial uses ear loops and I find them a bit comfortable after a while. So this time I’m using bias tape instead.

You can use store bought bias tape or make your own. I made my own so I could choose my own print.

Fabric collections

The fabrics are 100% organic cotton which is great if you’re wearing them against your skin. I really love these collections.

Face mask video tutorial

If you’re sick, in order to protect others, the best advice is to stay home and stay away from others.

If you can’t just stay home then you should wear a face mask as well as wash your hands properly and frequently and follow the advice of the health authorities in your country.

Some pharmacies have run out of masks so I thought it would be a good idea to show you  how you can make one quickly and easily using some beautiful fabrics – check out the cat fabric in the video (details below).

And while you’re at it, and particularly if you can’t leave the home because of restrictions, you could use the time to  make a few for your family and friends.

NOTE: I used cotton fabrics, so they may not be as effective as the material used in medical masks but certainly they’re better than nothing if you’re sick and can’t buy one anywhere.

I hope you stay well during the COVID-19 outbreak. All the best!
