Learn foundation piecing with the popular Storm at sea block

The history of the Storm at Sea quilt pattern is not well-documented, and the origin story of this popular traditional quilt pattern is lost in the sands of time.

However, many quilt blocks and patterns were named and created around the Great Depression, and it is possible that the Storm at Sea pattern was created during this time.

One writer at scrapdash.com was able to find a newspaper clipping of the pattern for the different pieces, which was from the Kansas City Star newspaper in 1932 though there are earlier examples I’ve found in the Quilt index.

Despite the lack of a clear origin story, the Storm at Sea pattern remains a popular and timeless quilt block pattern that creates an exciting quilt full of movement and the illusion of rolling, thundering waves.

There are different ways to make the block but by far the easiest is using foundation piecing.

  1. Storm at Sea. My friend and I made this block, with the templates, from this site. Unfortunately, the side triangle piece, does not fit, in length! I printed a bunch and had to create my own template, to fit. It seams about 1/2” short. Needs to be 6 1/2” to fit the 6 1/2” center square. The small square in a square, is perfect and the center square. Would you correct this in your templates. Thank you. I follow you and receive your emails, I love your blog, site and video tutorials.

    1. Is it possible that your printer scaled the drawing down? I made the video tutorial with these same templates and I’ve sold many templates and no one has had an issue with the size before. This makes me suspect your printer is scaling down the template.

      1. I printed out the sheet with the long triangle and small square, they were together on the sheet. The small square is perfect, it is only the long triangle square, that is weird? 🤷🏼 I will try to print from the site again! Thank you
