Mini Sawtooth star quilt block

I love star blocks in any size and this 3″ star block is a cutie.

Today’s video demonstrates how to make the block with foundation piecing.

I chose to make this 3″ block with foundation piecing because it’s a lot easier to get an accurate block with foundation piecing than with traditional piecing when working with small sizes. Traditional templates however are also included in the download.

I use regular copy paper for my templates but you may find it to be a bit thick in this size, particularly if you’re learning foundation piecing.

In that case you can use special paper for foundation piecing if you prefer.

Let’s get to it!

Note: You’ll see a yellow ruler on the video. If you intend to do a bit of foundation this ruler is must:

Blocks can be made with traditional piecing or with foundation piecing.

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Buy individual chapters of my book

Now that my publisher is going out of business I have bought the rights to publish my book. Now you can download individual chapters. Each digital download is a bundle with 4 quilt patterns in it.

As well as the instructions and fabric needs to make the blocks you’ll find a section on quiltmaking basics at the end of the pattern that discusses:

  • Tools
  • Squaring up blocks
  • Borders
  • Assembly and quilting
  • Binding
