This is the first block in the Mysteries Down Under quilt.
Card trick is a classic and popular block. It’s usually made with triangles but this version uses mainly squares and rectangles.

My book Turnabout Patchwork
“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.
Buy individual chapters of my book
Now that my publisher is going out of business I have bought the rights to publish my book. Now you can download individual chapters. Each digital download is a bundle with 4 quilt patterns in it.
As well as the instructions and fabric needs to make the blocks you’ll find a section on quiltmaking basics at the end of the pattern that discusses:
- Tools
- Squaring up blocks
- Borders
- Assembly and quilting
- Binding
See all the quilts in the book in a real life project

Thank you, Teresa….just pre-ordered your book. Will look forward to seeing how the mystery quilt unfolds.

Hi, I assume we just make one block for the QM? There is a nine block shown at the end of the video which made me wonder.

I’m a little disappointed at the lack of info in the email, the video on how to make the block is fine and easy to follow but how many blocks are we supposed to make ,do we make them with all the same colours and how do these colours relate to the colours suggested in the initial mystery quilt email

Hi Sally, the variations at the end are for people who won’t be making the quilt. Just one block. If you need to make more I’ll say so on the post 😊

Made this quilt many years ago. It’s an old Jeffrey Gutcheon design. Name misspelt probably
