How to Quilt-as-you-go (QAYG) – narrow sashing

The finished sashing width for this project is 1/2 inch but it can be adjusted to a wider or narrower sashing. Learn the  technique in under 3 minutes:

Materials

For the block sandwich

  • A piece of backing fabric the same size as the block
  • A piece of batting 1 inch larger than the block
  • One finished block

For the sashing

  • One strip of sashing fabric 1 1/8 inch x the length of the block side
  • 1 strip of sashing fabric 1 3/4 inch x the length of the block side

Do you like this quilting technique? Check out my other Quilt-as-you-go video that uses 2 inch sashing strips:

I enjoy quilting when I’m in the mood to quilt! A huge mood killer is the thought of quilting an entire quilt. That is a big bite! I like to have stopping or testing points where I can panic at the scale of my quilt, and rethink how big want it in mid project. Thankfully I found TeresaDownUnder, and her videos! I can make any size quilt one COMPLETED square at a time!!!! Yep, I’m gonna start a new quilt this weekend – a recliner cover quilt. I feel good about this!

  2. This is probably a silly question, but for the horizontal sashing, do I just cut (and probably piece together) fabric strips the width of the quilt, and proceed the same way as the vertical ones? I’m trying to figure out the best way–considered joining 4 blocks with sashing in a square, and connecting those to other 4 blocks (if that makes sense!) Love this tutorial, thank you!

  3. Love this! In regards to the wide slashing technique…..how much extra backing fabric would be needed?

  4. I notice your joined blocks have cornerstones, but these are not addressed in the videos. I’d appreciate knowing the secret! Liz
