Adding corners to a four patch quilt block

In this tutorial you’ll learn to make a quick and easy bow tie block but also how to add a rounded corner to any block. This technique should work with any four patch block.

Sewing curves is a bit fiddly but at the same time it’s quite straight forward.

The trick to sewing curves is using lots of pins or not many pins at all depending who you talk to. I do use a lot of pins in general. Though I’ve tried using fewer. Sometimes it depends on how open or closed the curve is. If it’s an easier curve it may be easy to do with fewer pins.

You can also try and use glue instead.

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Buy individual chapters of my book

Now that my publisher is going out of business I have bought the rights to publish my book. Now you can download individual chapters. Each digital download is a bundle with 4 quilt patterns in it.

As well as the instructions and fabric needs to make the blocks you’ll find a section on quiltmaking basics at the end of the pattern that discusses:

  • Tools
  • Squaring up blocks
  • Borders
  • Assembly and quilting
  • Binding
