This block goes by the Rambler name but it’s also called Railroad Crossing.
I stitched the block traditionally but it’s also typically assembled with foundation piecing.
Let’s watch how to make it:

My book Turnabout Patchwork
“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.
Buy individual chapters of my book
Now that my publisher is going out of business I have bought the rights to publish my book. Now you can download individual chapters. Each digital download is a bundle with 4 quilt patterns in it.
As well as the instructions and fabric needs to make the blocks you’ll find a section on quiltmaking basics at the end of the pattern that discusses:
- Tools
- Squaring up blocks
- Borders
- Assembly and quilting
- Binding

Hello Teresa,
Thank you for breaking down a complicated block into simple shapes and sewing instructions. I would like to make this block. I wonder if anybody has made a scrappy version.

that rambling block looks so difficult and complicated, but it really isn’t.. Really nice. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Teresa,….absolutely love this one, and the history from Barbara……this is a “must do”. I love antique quilt making, & reproduction fabrics. Love the feeling I get thinking of the women back then when they were first making the quilt. ..what their life was like, their families, their chores,…when they found the time for sewing…….fascinating! Thanks again, Elizabeth

Thank you for posting this video. I’m using this pattern in my quilt guild’s challenge this year. As I was going through your video, I couldn’t find the measurement for the center square. What size to I need to cut? Thank you!
