3D block beginner quilt block paper piecing sewing triangle in a square

Video tutorial Triangle in a square quilt block

This tutorial is for a paper piecing block. Regular templates are also available below.

This is the perfect block to start paper piecing and make blocks with perfect points with no effort.

I use printing paper but you can use phone book paper or any other paper you have available. The thinner the better.

Use a shorter stitch setting so it’s easier to remove the paper at the end.

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

  1. Hi, Teresa. How do you make your blocks? Do you use a computer program? I have the Creative Grids Triangle in a Square ruler and the companion HRT ruler and nothing is working for me to make a 9-inch finished triangle in a square. I always mess up the bottom right corner. It’s crazy. I even tried making freezer paper templates using the rulers. Maybe I should try tracing it and sewing on the paper and see if I have any better luck. I have printed out your 7-inch finished triangle in a square, but I’d rather have a 9 inch. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

  2. Hi Ivy, I draw the templates in Electric Quilt 8 but most domestic printers can only print templates that are about 10” x 7.5” so you’ll have to draw the template yourself if you want a 9” x 9” finish. You could draw it on freezer paper. If you haven’t done foundation piecing with freezer paper I have a couple of tutorials for it.

    I hope this helps.
