Whirlwind potholder with self binding

If you’re a follower of my blog you probably saw the Whirlwind block video tutorial I posted recently. The tutorial makes 2 blocks at once using 2 strips of fabric sewn together.

This week I’ll show you how to turn those two blocks and two more into a potholder.

I usually turn discarded quilt blocks into potholders to give away as gifts when going for dinner at a friend’s or as small gifts for different occasions.

The potholder is 11 inch square.

Materials

  • Two 40 inch x 2 1/2 inch strips of fabric in contrasting colours
  • 11 inch square piece of batting
  • 14 inch square backing fabric
  • One strip of fabric 11 inch x 1 inch for the sashing
  • Two strips of fabric 5 1/4 x 1 inch for the sashing

Instructions

Make the tutorial below twice to obtain four 5 1/4 inch blocks.

Adding the sashing strips

Take the sashing strips and sew the shorter strips between blocks as shown on the picture below.

Then stitch the longer strip to join both rectangles into a large square.

This is your quilt top.

Assembling the potholder

Place the backing fabric, right side down. Then put the batting on top and the quilt top on top with right side up.

Pin and quilt together. I quilted along all seams in straight lines making a diamonds grid.

Self binding

Now self bind as shown on the video.
