Hidden wells with 4 strips in solids – video tutorial

Hidden wells is one of my favourite quilts. This technique was developed by Mary Ellen Hopkins in 1989 for her Hidden wells quilt. It can be done with a different number of strips in different or equal widths.

This time I’ve tried playing with high contrasting solids to get a different result.

What do you think?

I’ve done a few hidden wells blocks.

You can play with fabrics to get special effects such as in this ombre palette.

Fabric collection

I made this block as Michael Miller Ambassador and used their silky Cotton Couture solids   from the Michael Miller Colour wheel fat quarter bundle I received..

Check out other fabric combinations on the video.

Other hidden wells blocks I’ve made:

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

This time I’ve tried playing with colour to see what I came up with.

Two techniques to make half square triangles

Half square triangles or HSTs are the foundation for many blocks. You can see many different ones on the video.

HSTs can be made in many different ways. The techniques I demonstrate make 2 HSTs at once using 2 squares of contrasting fabrics and 8 half square triangles at once.

The 8 at once method sheds units with bias seams. Some quilters don’t like bias seams because they can be stretchy.
