Close up
Block type: 4-patch
Block size: 10 1/2 inches
Colour scheme: reds, greens and neutrals
Texture/fabric manipulation: gathering
Cut:
- 1 gingham 5 1/2 in squares
- 1 pale green 5 1/2 in square
- 1 cream 6 in square
- 6 in gingham triangle
- 6 in pale green triangle
- 2 x 6 in cream triangles (cut a 6 in square and cut in the diagonal to obtain 2 triangles)
- 2 x 5 in squares in cream
- 4 x 4 in squares in cream
Making the rabbit ears
Cut the 2 x 5 in squares and 4 x 4 in squares and cut each on the diagonal.
Fold in half.
Stitch both open sides leaving a 1/4 in allowance
Now cut the corner to avoid bulk when turning inside out.
As close to the edge as possible cut along the longer side.
Turn inside out.
Press flat.
Now with a strong thread, gather the fabric along the long edge as per picture.
When you are done pull and stitch both corners.
This is what you will get when you do all the triangles.
Now, with all the pieces cut as explained above, lay them all on the mat as per picture below.
Now it’s time to stitch all together.
Place the rabbit years as per picture trying to align them well (better than in the picture!) against the triangle edges.
Stitch leaving a 1/4 in allowance.
Do the same for both triangles.
Then place the pale triangle over the rabbit ears with right side facing down.
Do the same for the gingham triangle.
Pin.
Now stitch leaving a 1/4 seam allowance.
Trim off excess fabric from the edge.
Place all the pieces that make the block.
Stitch the first row. Then the second. And finally both rows together.
The block is done.
Press well to flatten bulky seams.

Thank you for your kind comments. Judy, I’m making this quilt without planning for fabric as I usually do. I have no more than one yard of pale green and I hope that’ll be enough. And for the reds I’m using 3 other fabrics and I have between half a yard to a yard of each. I’ll use one or the other depending on ow much fabric is left of each. As for the cream, I usually have a few yards of it that I keep cutting from.
