Quilting shortcuts collection video tutorial

Have you seen these alternatives to make these popular quilt blocks?

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

How to make 4 quilts starting with a single shoo fly block

The tutorial today is for a disappearing shoo fly block.

I’ve made many disappearing blocks over the years, I’ve even got a book on the technique. Disappearing shoo fly remains one of my favourite blocks.

Learn how to make the block:

If you like the block and would like to make a quilt -or even 4 quilts!- check out  The four seasons of the heart quilt pattern.

The pattern has instructions to make 4 different quilts using the 4 variations of the disappearing shoo fly quilt block we just learned. Each block layout makes a very different quilt.

About the pattern

Skill level: beginner.

Quilt sizes: crib, lap, twin and queen.

Finished block size: 11 ½”.

Quilt style: traditional piecing with quick cutting instructions.

Charm squares and fat quarter friendly.

You can use the colouring pages at the end to choose the colour scheme.

Quilting: I quilted this quilt using free-motion.

In the 14 page pattern I have included lots of diagrams and written quick cutting instructions as well as links to 1 of my video tutorials that demonstrate how to make the blocks.

Also in the pattern you will find colouring pages that you can use to decide on a colour scheme for the quilt.

Foundation piecing miniature quilting – video tutorial

These mini blocks are 1 1/2″ and 2″ finished. They’re a lot of fun to make. You can use them as magnets or brooches or anything that takes your fancy.

The video demonstrates how to make the blocks with foundation piecing.

In such small sizes I find it’s a lot easier to get an accurate block than using traditional piecing.

On next video we’ll make a quilt with the brooch templates. Stay tuned!

But first let’s make the blocks!

How to make a finished 1 1/2″ and a 2″ miniature block

Foundation piecing paper

I used regular copy paper but you may find it to be a bit thick.

You can use special paper for foundation piecing if you prefer.

Foundation paper ruler

Note: I recently started to use an Add a quarter ruler, the yellow ruler in the video, after some followers recommended it and I have to say it’s a true time saver.
