Technique: Partial seams

Technique: partial seams

The partial seam technique lets you piece a quilt block by sewing a seam only halfway to start with. This leaves an opening that makes adding additional patches or borders much easier. Once everything’s in place, you simply go back and complete the rest of the seam.

It’s a simple but powerful technique that’s worth adding to your quilting skills — it lets you create designs you wouldn’t be able to piece in a traditional way, while keeping everything flat, accurate, and looking great. Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, this is a handy method that can make your piecing process much less frustrating — and it’s a lot easier than it looks!

When you make a full quilt using this week’s partial seam block, it produces a woven pattern, adding texture, depth, and visual interest to your finished quilt—turning a simple block into something much more sophisticated.
