Making flying geese sashing

This tutorial shows you how to make sashing using flying geese units. In the video, I demonstrate a 2 1/2” x 12” sashing strip, perfect for 12” x 12” quilt blocks. The pattern bundle also includes two additional sizes: 2 1/2” x 9” and 2” x 7”, so you can use the same technique with different block sizes.

Flying geese sashing adds movement and direction to your quilt. Instead of plain strips between blocks, you get a secondary design that links everything together. You can use contrasting fabric to make the geese stand out, or keep them subtle for a softer look.

It’s a great way to:

  • Add interest without complicated piecing
  • Create visual flow across rows
  • Introduce an extra colour without changing your blocks
  • Make simple blocks look more detailed

If your blocks feel a bit plain, flying geese sashing can lift the whole quilt while keeping the construction straightforward.
