Hourglass blocks look great in any quilt and add strong movement without much planning. If you’ve ever avoided them because they seem slow to sew, here’s the good news: you can make four blocks at the same time with just two charm squares. It’s quick, tidy, and perfect for using those pre-cut packs sitting in your sewing room.
This method is great for scrappy quilts and works well when you want many matching blocks without cutting lots of triangles. Because charm squares are already cut to size, there’s very little prep. You simply sew, cut, press, and trim. Before you know it, you’ll have a neat little stack of blocks ready to join your next project.
The hourglass block’s strong centre point gives it a sharp geometric look that suits classic and modern quilts. You can make repeats in the same colours for a tidy layout or mix prints to give your quilt more energy. Either way, the results look considered with very little effort.
You can use these blocks on their own, place them between busier blocks, or build full quilt tops from them. They also make great borders, table runners, and cushions. Don’t be surprised if this becomes your favourite way to use charm squares.
