How to make a hexies pincushion – English Paper Piecing (EPP)

EPP pincushion

If you’ve never attempted English paper piecing (EPP), this beginner-friendly project is the perfect way to dive into this enjoyable craft. EPP allows you to create intricate patterns and designs by hand-stitching fabric pieces together, making it a rewarding experience for crafters of all levels.

For this particular project, you’ll need a sheet of 1 1/4 inch hexagon templates (pdf), which can be easily printed out as a PDF. You will only require 8 templates for a small yet charming design.

Materials Needed

  • Fabric: Choose a selection of your favorite fabrics. It’s a great opportunity to use up scraps or to mix and match colors and patterns you love.
  • Thread: A neutral-colored thread works well, but you can also pick a color that complements your fabric choice.
  • Needle: Use a sharp hand-sewing needle that can easily pass through the fabric.

Steps to Get Started

  1. Print Your Templates: Start by printing out the hexagon templates from the provided link. You can adjust the size according to your preferences, but the 1 1/4 inch hexagon templates (pdf) size is a great starting point for beginners.
  2. Cut Out Your Hexagons: Carefully cut out the hexagon templates using sharp scissors. You’ll want precision here to ensure each piece fits together perfectly.
  3. Prepare Your Fabric: Cut squares of fabric slightly larger than your templates. You’ll need enough to cover the hexagons.
  4. Baste the Fabric: Lay a fabric square right side up on top of a hexagon template, then fold the edges of the fabric over the edges of the paper. Use basting stitches to secure the fabric in place, ensuring it’s tightly wrapped around the hexagon.
  5. Assemble Your Design: Once all your hexagons are prepared, start arranging them into your desired pattern. You may want to lay them out on a flat surface before sewing to finalize your design.
  6. Sew the Hexagons Together: Begin stitching the edges of the hexagons together, using small, even stitches. Be careful to maintain the shape and not pull too tightly, which could distort the pieces.
  7. Remove the Paper Templates: After you have sewn your hexagons together, gently remove the paper templates. This can be done by carefully pulling them out, ensuring you don’t damage the fabric.

As you progress, you’ll find that EPP not only hones your sewing skills but also allows for a meditative and calming experience.

Enjoy experimenting with colors and patterns, and don’t hesitate to share your finished project with fellow craft enthusiasts! Happy sewing!
