Gingham quilt block – video tutorial

Gingham is a cotton fabric that originated in the mills of Manchester, England, in the 17th century. Its name is derived from the Malay word “ginggang,” meaning “striped.”

Gingham became popular among farmers and labourers in the 18th and 19th centuries due to its durability and affordability. It was commonly used for workwear, aprons, and quilts, and its checked pattern became a symbol of rural life and Americana.

Gingham continued to be popular in the 20th century, used in clothing and home decor.

Today, it remains a beloved and versatile fabric with a rich history.

I love gingham, and I love gingham quilts.

The trick to a gingham block is to choose the colours well. You will need a colour in 3 shades, a dark, a medium and a light colour. Choose single colour fabrics with good contrast.

Solids work more effectively though some tone on tone prints may also work well.

In the tutorial I make 2 different sizes but the block can be made in any size.

  1. Teresa, whilst watching your video I thought,.. I have a pile of different coloured “gingham” fabrics – wonder if I made this with my gingham fabrics instead of the plain colours, would that work?……………….it wasn’t until the end I realised the total effect of the plain blocks……..DER!!!!…..(may need more coffee!)…………. Thank you, ..this is brilliant… Cheers, Elizabeth
