I’ve discovered in my 60+ years of sewing and quilting that the simplest blocks and patterns can be made even more glorious with a bit of a great fabric added. I just finished a pretty rather ordinary table runner for Christmas, but put a gold flecked border on it and it just changed everything!
I wish more teachers would emphasize this as a way to encourage new quilters when they see that their work just sparkles! Not necessary on everything, of course, but I have never seen a teacher swap out a fabric in a block to make a big difference. I have a small stash of metallics that I enjoy using, and when I give away a quilt or whatever that I have jazzed up a bit, they always have something to say about the glittery parts, and it just sets a different attitude about their gift.
I’d like to ask you to do a tutorial on for new sewers on simple ways to dress up ordinary blocks, like snowballing the corners, sashings or borders, or adding occasionally to piano keys, etc. You’re a very good teacher, you must have hundreds of ways to dress up simple blocks!!
