This quilt is suitable for a beginner.
Finished size: 40 in x 40 in.
Materials
The colour scheme is warm colours, pinks and purples.
Front
- Scrap fabrics or 10 to 15 fat quarters in assorted colours: reds, pinks, purples, browns and yellows
- 1 yard cream fabric for sashing
Back
- 42 in x 42 in fabric square
Block size: The final block size is 9 inches. There is a total of 12 blocks.
Wonky log cabin block construction
Cut a wonky piece of fabric for the piece in the middle.
Cut two more wonky pieces to attach to the side of the centre.
Cut both pieces slightly larger than the sides of the centre square.
Sew and square sides.
Repeat with the other two sides.
Square sides again.
Calculate how much fabric is needed in the last border to complete a 9 inch block and cut 4 strips that are wide enough to reach the 9 inches.
Repeat as for previous steps cutting and attaching the pieces around the centre.
Cut strips wide and long enough so that some fabric is left over around, particularly for very wonky blocks.
Press the block, square it to 9 inches and cut.
One down 11 more to go.
Sashing
Cut 12 x 2 1/2 squares of 12 different print matching fabrics.
Cut 24 2 1/2 x 9 inch strips and stitch to one side of each block.
Arrange the blocks as desired. My quilt is laid out as a gradient on the diagonal from yellow to pink. Stitch 4 blocks in a column. Stitch 4 separate columns.
Arrange at this stage the placement of the 2 1/2 in squares to match the placement and colour of the blocks.
One the layout is decided, stitch the 2 1/2 to the left sashing strips.
Piece alternating cream/square/cream/square/cream /square/cream (see picture below).
Now sew the long sashing strips to the first column, then the second, and finally the third. Follow the picture below as a stitching guide.
The quilt is stipple quilted.
