fabric manipulation fabric scraps project quilting tutorial

Fabric manipulations: smocking

These fabric manipulations are part of a quilt. The quilt has 25 blocks. Each block is made out of a centre 5 inch square featuring some fabric texture such as pin tucks, smocking, shirring and the like.

I also used lattice smocking to add some interest to a notebook cover.

If you are interested in fabric manipulations check out the 25 different fabric manipulations I did for my Textured quilt sampler.

  1. Thank you! Thank you twice! I learned smocking over 40 years ago and have completely forgotten every single thing i knew then!!! You are so generous to share and I am eager to learn again!

  2. Thank you! Nay, some of the manipulations are more fiddly than others but none of them are hard to do. From memory Number 25 is the.one that takes the longest by far, probably 3 hours Many are very quick to do and you could get them done in between half an hour and an one hour, at most 2 for the hand stitched. We’re talking about 5 inch square of manipulation, it’s just a small surface.
