Using freezer paper in quilting – essential technique

Using freezer paper

Quilters and sewists often rely on freezer paper for a variety of applications.

Here are the primary ways I use freezer paper in quilting:

Foundation piecing

One of my favorite ways to use freezer paper is for foundation piecing. Simply trace the template onto the freezer paper or print directly onto it. This technique eliminates the need to tear the paper, and you can reuse the template countless times. For a detailed demonstration, check out my video!

Cutting paper templates

I enjoy using freezer paper to cut template shapes because it offers both speed and precision, far surpassing the traditional methods of pinning or tracing templates onto fabric.

Be sure to pay close attention to which side of the freezer paper you need to iron to avoid creating a mirrored block.

For a visual demonstration of how I incorporate both techniques, check out the video below.

Reverse appliqué

Appliqué is another excellent application for freezer paper, and my personal favorite appliqué technique.

In my experience, freezer paper appliqué yields more precise shapes, making it a preferred choice. I also find it easier to manage than many other methods, enhancing the overall crafting process.

Where to buy freezer paper

In the US, you can easily find freezer paper at many stores. In Australia, you can buy it at Spotlight stores and some specialized quilting shops.

Freezer paper usually comes in rolls, which is handy for most people. But if you quilt often, using freezer paper sheets that you can print on will save you time.

I’ve recently been using a product that comes in US Letter size. I just cut the sides down to make it A4, and it works great for me. This makes my quilting projects easier and more accurate.

While it may require a bit more effort, freezer paper on a roll serves wonderfully for both printing and tracing purposes.

You can easily cut this roll into A4 or US letter sizes, allowing you to print directly on it with ease.
