As we start a new year, many of us are looking for new hobbies and activities to enrich our lives. If you’re looking for a fulfilling and creative pursuit, I highly recommend quilting.
Quilting is a popular hobby and craft that has been enjoyed by people for generations.
Quilting allows you to express your creativity and create beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces. It can be a relaxing and meditative activity that helps you unwind and reduce stress.
With so many techniques and styles to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start.
Here are some tips to help you get started on your quilting journey.
Start with simple patterns
When you’re first starting out, it’s best to start with simple patterns.
Choose a pattern with straight lines and minimal curves to help you master the basics.
As you gain experience and confidence, you can move on to more complex patterns.
Use quality fabric and supplies
The quality of your fabric and supplies can make a big difference in the outcome of your quilt.
Choose high-quality, 100% cotton fabric for your quilt top and backing.
Invest in good quality thread, rotary cutters, mats, and rulers to ensure accuracy and ease of use.
Using the right needle and thread can make a big difference in the success of your quilt.
Use a fine, sharp needle for piecing, and choose a thread that matches your fabric.
For quilting, use a heavier weight thread that will stand out against your quilt top.
Take your time
Quilting is a time-consuming process, and it’s important to take your time and not rush through the steps.
Precision and accuracy are key to a successful quilt, so take the time to measure and cut your pieces accurately.
Press your seams
Pressing your seams is an important step in quilting. It helps to flatten the fabric and make it easier to sew the pieces together. Always press your seams to one side, and alternate the direction of your seams with each row to reduce bulk.
Practice, practice, practice
Like any skill, quilting takes practice.
Don’t be discouraged if your first quilt doesn’t turn out perfect.
Keep practicing and experimenting with different techniques and styles.
Join a quilting group or take a class to learn from more experienced quilters.
Try new techniques
Quilting is a constantly evolving craft, with new techniques and styles being developed all the time.
Don’t be afraid to try something new, whether it’s a new technique or a different style of quilting.
Experimenting with new techniques and styles can help you grow as a quilter and develop your own unique style.
So let’s get started with these beginner blocks.

My book Turnabout Patchwork
“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.
