English Paper Piecing (EPP) is a timeless quilting technique that allows you to create intricate and stunning designs.

If you’re new to EPP, the Cobblestone pattern is a perfect project to start with.

In this video tutorial, I’ll guide you step by step through the process of sewing the Cobblestone pattern, helping you develop your EPP skills.

Whether you’re at home, traveling, or enjoying some downtime, this beginner-friendly project is a delightful way to explore the world of EPP.

How to make English paper piecing (EPP) cobblestones

Materials and Tools

Before we begin, let’s gather all the necessary materials and tools. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Cobblestones template (PDF)
  • Printer and paper for printing the template
  • Fabric scraps
  • Thread in complementary colors
  • Sharp fabric scissors
  • Sewing needles (preferably with a small eye)
  • Fabric glue or basting clips

Downloading and Printing the Template

Start by downloading the Cobblestones template. It’s a PDF file that you can easily print at home. Ensure your printer settings are set to 100% scale to maintain the accurate dimensions of the pattern.

Understanding the Cobblestone Pattern

The Cobblestone pattern consists of octagons and squares, each side measuring 1 inch. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the pattern’s layout and visualize how the shapes will come together to form the cobblestone design.

Cutting and Preparing the EPP Pieces

Cut out the octagons and squares paper pieces. If you prefer, you can also use pre-cut EPP papers, readily available in the market.

Basting the Fabric Pieces

Place a fabric piece on the wrong side of an EPP template. Fold the fabric over the edge of the template, securing it in place with a pin. Repeat this process for all the fabric pieces.

Sewing the Cobblestone Blocks

Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end. Starting with two fabric-covered EPP pieces, align the edges of the octagon and square, right sides together. Use a whipstitch or ladder stitch to sew along the folded edges, taking small, even stitches. Continue joining the EPP pieces, following the pattern’s design.

  3. It is very hard for me to see beyond the suggested color or fabric line in most quilt videos. I appreciate that you always show us other ideas for fabrics and colors! PLUS: Your patterns are always fun and the instructions clear. Thank you’ Teresa. L~ 🙂
