How to make a 6 pointed star quilt block without Y seams

Learn in 2 minutes:

60 degree ruler

If you plan to cut at 60 degrees a lot you may consider investing in a 60 degree ruler.

But if you still would like to try out this block, you still can make this block with a square or rectangular ruler with 60 degree lines.

Learn how to use your straight ruler to make this block:

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

  1. I’m super excited to try this. I have a ton of 2-1/2” strips I wanted to use. Can I swap those for the 3” strips and use 2” stripes and have a smaller star? Will this throw everything else off? I’m good at a lot of things, math is not one of them.

  2. I don’t actually have the math for this. It’s not my pattern. Marci Baker has a book of patterns for this technique.
