Gridwork quilt, pattern by Christa Watson
Today I’m reviewing a quilting book by Christa Watson of Christa Quilts and giving away one electronic copy.
Christa is an award-winning quilter and designer. She has authored many books, articles and patterns on quilting.
I really like the quilts in her latest book Piece and Quilt with Pre-cuts.
You can get a *signed* copy of the book on Christa’s shop.
This book is my kind of book. It’s full of good advice and tips on quilting. It has instructions to make 11 beautiful easy to make modern quilts and it’s made with pre-cuts. It can’t get any easier than that!
If you don’t have any pre-cuts that’s ok too. Just follow the tips on choosing fabrics Christa gives on her book.
There’s no waste in this book. One of the patterns uses the bits and pieces left over from the other quilts!
The book comes with very detailed instructions on how to quilt each quilt.
I put the book to the test and made a small version of Gridwork, a modern quilt made with blocks that are asymmetric.
I love asymmetric blocks because usually you can change the look of any quilt by just placing them in different directions.
You can put together this quilt in a weekend.

I love them all! I have been a little intimidated by “modern” quilts but if there is instruction on the actual quilting that sounds like my kind of book, beautiful!

I know that this book is designed for precuts but many of those designs would be great for scrap quilts. I love making scrap quilts. Love the designs in this book.

I like the quilt that is made up of one block with three different size squares and background fabric. The way it’s arranged, it reminds me of kites blowing in the wind. I also like it because the pieces are not so small that you loose the fabric design in the cutting. This would be really cute for a child or teenager using fun novelty prints thrown in.

I am a great fan of stars so would probably start with that one, Then i really like the dark chevrons on the bright background as well. So many choices, so little time!!!!

I’d pick Gridwork too! I think it’d be fun to fussy cut the squares in the asymmetric blocks~

Page 8, the six sided diamond shapes with a parallelogram in the middle. I’ve been saving a gorgeous layer cake and that would be perfect! But all of the quilt designs are beautiful, would love to make them all.

My favorite is the one with the dark background with the bright colored pieces containing floating parallelograms.

All of the quilts look so bright and refreshing. I could put some jelly rolls and some scraps to good use. I especially like the 6th image because I could use so many scraps and get it done quickly.

I would have to choose between quilts 2,6 & 10!! Probably would end up making 6 as it would go quickly. My son & family of 5 are soon moving into a new house & it would be fun to make the gr.kids new quilts!

I love the one that looks like empty thread spools (the last one) I think it looks good with a variety of colors but could look really cool monochromatic, maybe deep vibrant red and with a steel gray. very exciting.

Asymmetrical blocks have a particular charm. That one first and next would be the rectangles. Lovely choice of designs in the book with quilting designs included – my sort of quilting book!

Love the bright and bold HST pattern #7. Can just see that in bright Lego colours and Star Wars fabric for my 61/2 yo grandson, combining two of his favourite things.

Quilt 3 is the one I would love to make. The square in a square blocks and the improv design really speak to me. I recently did an overdye sequence in yellow to red, so I have 35 fat quarters bursting to be cut up in a quilt just like this!

I choose the 9th quilt as I can see it with scraps and we rely
on donations so generously given.

Hi Teresa I get your emails and your YouTube tutorials and want to leave a comment to go in the draw for Christa’s eBook but cannot find a way to do it. I love the one with. Ethical strips and the one with squares that have lines running through them. I love the. Erotically strips one because it reminds me of a piece of artwork I saw some years ago but could not afford to buy it. I love the squares one because, not only is it modern but is quite different from patterns we normally see. Love them both. Of course they would all be fun to make. Love your emails, Margaret

I love the geometric designs in each quilt plus a suggestion or a quilting motif. I have a huge problem when it comes to quilting a quilt. This is a wonderful book.

Don’t know the names, but my favorite is the one with the geometric shapes with the parallelogram in the middle of each one. Whew.

I liked them all and had a hard time deciding, but settled on the spool quilt. I really liked the quilting motif suggestions, also. I do a lot of hand quilting and am on the looking out for ideas all the time.

I am a big fan of stars, so that would be my first one to try. After that I would start at the beginning and work my way through the book.

I want to make a baby quilt in Christa’s Gridwork pattern, too… with fabrics that are “too pretty to cut up”! (I seem to have a lot of those fabrics!)
I *also* want to make the quilts on pages 2/12, 4/12, 5/12, 6/12, 7/12… just to start! (What a great book!)

Love the stars quilt (Starstruck?), particularly because the stars are a little off-centre. Also, the chevron quilt has some great contrast with dark and light!

I love the stars quilt (I’d use a different colorway) and number 9 – very modern. I’ve never made a stars quilt before & with a son living in USA, I’m sure he & his American wife would love it. The modern quilt I’d love to make in bright solids!

They are all wonderful! I think my two favorites are picture 6 of 12, and 10 of 12. The broken up jelly roll strips add great interest and I actually love the greys and muted colors used in the photo too! The other one I love for how the bold squares pop out from the background. Really cool quilts!

I love that you can make them all with precuts. I’d make the one that looks like dots and dashes (number 6 of 12 on the publisher’s image carousel) because it looks happy — like little spurts of conversation almost!

I love stars! They always draw my eye first. Would love to get comfortable enough using DFM that I would use some of the glorious colorful threads that really just make quilts pop! Now I’m going to look at your videos, great page!

Christa’s quick easy modern patterns include my favourite stars and bright HST’s, not to mention precuts making colour choices and combinations so simple. I love that this book is both a pattern and quilting book. A inspiration for anyone.

this is a great book and am planning on buying a copy for a friend who is very much into modern quilts but is battling her second bout of breast cancer but is still quilting a little. by the way love your emails and tutorials, keep up the good work.

There are several I would like to make. The first would be Frequency as I have several jelly rolls that need to find a place in a quilt. I also like the quilt that has a gray background with bright colored what looks to be arrows running all directions – fun!

I don’t have many precuts, but have lots of scraps that would do just fine. I gravitate to the quilts on pages 2, 6, and 8, but would probably start with page 2 as it looks like I could use up LOTS of scraps.
