  1. this is still quite new to me,,, why is it called a coin quilt? do you put any padding in it?
how big are the coloured strips and is the white one complete piece that the coloured strips are sewn to?

I don’t actually know why the quilt is called coin quilt. Coin quilts I’ve seen are made with rectangles of fabric on a strip, all in different colours or alternating background fabric, patterned/coloured fabric.

The rectangles size is 3.5 in x 6.5 in. I have used 60 in total, 15 per column. The white strips in the middle are 3 in x 45 in. Then you have a border about 4 inches wide.

The top is assembled by making the coloured strips, just sewing 15 rectangles together. After you have sewn 5 strips of rectangles, cut the white strips and join one white strip to the coloured strip and then another coloured strip, and so on. When you have the centre done, you need to add the border. Cut the 2 strips of white fabric 4.5 in x 45 in and add to the sides. Then you need to add another strip to the top and bottom. Cut another 4.5 in strip as wide as the quilt and stitch to each side.

The quilt is assembled in the usual manner. Place the backing on a flat surface, wrong side up, then the batting in the middle and the quilt top on top with the right side up. Pin and quilt.

  3. Hi there, I don’t know the exact size and it was a gift so I don’t have it with me to measure. But it’s about 45 in x 40 in… more or less. You can do the exact calculations using the sizes given ( The rectangles size is 3.5 in x 6.5 in. I have used 60 in total, 15 per column. The white strips in the middle are 3 in x 45 in. Then you have a border about 4 inches wide). And yes, it’s a lap quilt though a large one.

  4. It is also called “Chinese Coins.” I think it is supposed to look like stacks of coins, seen from the side. I’m getting ready to start my own coin quilt with a quilt as you go method. I’ve got all the strips cut, just need to get started!

  5. I was told that the coin quilt was popular as a wedding gift in colonial days. It was meant to teach couples to be frugal and save their money. The coins are always stacked as you would stack coins when saving them.
